Description
1 Blacket Place in Edinburgh is a two-storey, three-bay house built in the Jacobean style during the later 19th century, before 1867. It features stugged sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, a base course, stone mullions, and timber transoms on architraved windows, along with an eaves band course.
The north elevation, which is the entrance side, has an advanced gabled central bay that is chamfered at the ground floor and corbelled to a square at the first floor. It includes a lancet-headed, architraved and roll moulded doorway with a stone bracketed canopy, leading to a timber panelled door. Above the door is a lancet-headed bipartite window, and there is a blinded arrow slit set in the gablehead, along with block skewputts and an obelisk finial. The outer bays feature stone canopies over tripartite windows at the ground floor and bipartite windows at the first floor, which break the eaves in pedimented dormerheads adorned with decorative strapwork and obelisk finials.
The east side elevation has single windows at both the ground and first floors on the outer left and right, with a corbel that supports a decorative strapwork corniced gablehead stack. The west side elevation also has a corbel with decorative strapwork supporting a corniced gablehead stack.
The house has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof that is swept at the eaves, block skewputts, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1996.
There is a former carriage house to the southeast, which is tall and narrow with a gable design similar to the main building. It features a boarded two-leaf door at the ground level and a single window above.
The property is enclosed by low boundary walls to the street, with missing railings, a coped mutual boundary wall to the west, and a high coped rubble mutual boundary wall to the east.
