Gate Piers To Blacket Place, Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh

Blacket Place Lodge, built around 1825, is a single-storey, three-bay classical former gatelodge with an adjoining single-storey wing to the south. It is constructed of cream sandstone coursed rubble with droved dressings, featuring a base course, advanced cills, stone canopies over the windows and doorway, a cornice, and overhanging eaves.

The entrance elevation has a doorway in the advanced central bay, which includes a two-leaf panelled door and a small plate glass fanlight above. There is a pediment that breaks the eaves above the doorway, with bipartite windows in the outer bays to the right and left. The single-storey wing to the south has a bipartite window on the outer right and a blocked doorway on the outer left, along with a lean-to that has a boarded door adjoining to the south.

On the north side, facing Blacket Place, there is a single bay featuring a three-light, full-height, canted window. The lodge has diamond-patterned, leaded windows with mullions and transoms. It is topped with red tiled piended roofs and has tall, rendered octagonal stacks to the south with octagonal moulded cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The gatepiers, designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1825, are a pair of corniced Tudor Gothic structures featuring blind traceried panels and are made of cream sandstone ashlar.
