Description

St Michaels Lodge in Easter Pencaitland is a 2-storey, 3-bay house built in 1831, designed in the Jacobean style. At the rear, there is a single-storey service wing. The building is constructed from squared, stugged, and coursed yellow freestone, featuring plain ashlar dressings, a base course, chamfered reveals, and hoodmoulds over the openings. The windows have stone mullions.

On the south elevation, the centre bay is gabled and advanced, with a doorway that includes a fanlight and a first-floor window, along with a blank shield above. There are bipartite windows in the flanking bays, and smaller windows directly under the eaves on the first floor. The north elevation features the gabled single-storey service wing that projects to the left. Both the east and west elevations have a window on each floor at the centre, with a blind ground floor window on the east elevation and a small doorway inserted to the right. The sash and case windows have a lying-pane glazing pattern.

The gablet coped skews are adorned with consoled skewputts, and there are corbelled polygonal stacks at the gable wallhead with coping. These stacks are paired on the east and west elevations, and the central stack on the south elevation has a frieze with paterae detail. The roof is covered with purple slates. Surrounding the property are rubble freestone retaining walls with semi-circular coping, and square piers topped with pyramidal caps.
