Description
The gates and gatepiers at South Lodge, Winton Castle, date from the late 17th or early 18th century. They feature a pair of ornate, delicate wrought iron gates and an overthrow set between decorative iron-work pilaster-piers. The gates are flanked by wrought iron pedestrian gates that are likely of a later date but designed sensitively to match the original style.
The overthrow is adorned with acanthus scrolls, simple scrolls, and foliage, centered around an oval panel with entwined monogram caps and finials on the pilaster-piers. The flanking pedestrian gates have a simpler design.
The gatepiers are made of ashlar and include recessed panels, coping, and ball finials, which are sharp and possibly date from the early 20th century.
