Description

Penkaet House, located in Easter Pencaitland, was built in the late 17th century for James Hamilton, Lord Pencaitland. It is one of a mirrored pair of two-storey, L-plan pavilions that were originally part of Pencaitland House, which was destroyed by fire in 1876. The exterior features white painted harling with ashlar dressings that have chamfered arrises and generous eaves. Notably, the building has unusual angle blocks.

On the northwest elevation, there are four irregularly spaced bays, with a door to the left of centre that includes a strip fanlight, and a window in each of the remaining bays on both floors. An ashlar rubble wall is attached to the outer left side. The northeast elevation also has four irregular bays, but with smaller irregular windows. The southwest and southeast elevations each have two symmetrical bays, with windows on both floors.

There is a stairblock in the re-entrant angle to the south, accompanied by a lean-to rubble outbuilding on the right and a lean-to rubble porch on the left, which features a panelled door. A short stretch of rubble wall runs south from the building. The sash and case windows have a small-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates and has piend roofs with swept eaves, along with corniced stone stacks and lead flashings.
