Description

Temperance Hall in Wester Pencaitland is a village hall built in 1883. It is a single-storey building with a T-shaped plan. The main elevation features cream sandstone that is squared and bull-faced, while the sides and rear are constructed of rubble. The building has ashlar margins, an eaves course, and gablet coping on the skews.

The main east-west block is located at a crossroads and has a symmetrical five-bay south elevation. In the center gabled bay, there is a hoodmoulded tripartite window, along with a rectangular panel that reads "Temperance Hall in Memory of Arthur Trevelyan 1883." The flanking bays have recessed panels, each with a tripartite window. The outer bays feature advanced gabled entrances, each with a roll-moulded surround, deep-set two-leaf doors with a fanlight, and a square panel in the gablehead. The center bay has a cross finial, while the outer bays have simpler finials.

The return elevations are gabled, with two single windows and an oculus on the west elevation. There is a later lean-to addition on the east elevation, positioned below a hoodmoulded bipartite window. The smaller and lower north-south wing is attached to the north elevation. The building has large square-pane glazing patterns in top-hopper windows on the south and east sides, and sash and case windows on the west. The roof is covered with grey-green slates and features louvred and finialled triangular ventilators, as well as decorative polygonal louvred timber ventilators. At the center of the roof, there is a decorative polygonal louvred timber ventilator with a pyramidal roof and a gilded weathervane. A coped stack is located to the north of the north-south wing.

In front of the hall, there is a terraced forecourt with simple wrought- and cast-iron railings.
