Description

The Cross is an early 19th century cottage featuring a wing that extends at right angles and has undergone later alterations. The cottage has a coursed ashlar front with an eaves course, while the sides and rear are constructed of rubble with harl pointing and stugged dressings, along with later cement repairs.

On the north elevation, the cottage presents a three-bay, single-storey front, with the outer left bay being slightly lower. The entrance features a deep ashlar surround with a cornice, a deeply set panelled door, and a small-pane fanlight above. To the outer right, there are stone mullioned bipartite windows, with a timber mullioned window to the left and the lower bay on the outer left. Gabled slate-hung dormers flank the doorway, each with timber mullioned bipartites, eaves brackets, and finials. The central dormer has a segmentally arched shape with a leaded roof. A shaped wall with a pedestrian gateway is attached to the outer right.

The rear wing is four irregular bays long and includes a stugged stone forestair at the center, leading to a gabled hayloft dormer above. There is another hayloft dormer over the doorway to the left, a doorway to the right adjacent to the cottage block, and large machinery or carriage doors on the outer left. A brick wallhead stack is present. The cottage features a small-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows, while the dormer windows have plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with grey and purple slates, with a piend roof on the lower bay of the cottage and ashlar coping on the skews and gablehead stacks.
