Description

Gardener's Cottage at Blackadder House is an early 19th-century cottage with later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey building with an attic and features three bays. The cottage is constructed of finely droved ashlar with polished dressings on the south elevation, while the side and rear elevations are made of roughly stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings. There is a base course present.

On the south elevation, the central bay is advanced and gabled, featuring a cavetto-moulded doorpiece with a deep-set boarded door that has wrought-iron hinges and a two-pane rectangular fanlight above. There is a lateral window in the gablehead, and each flanking bay has a hexagonal-headed window with polished margins.

The east elevation has a gabled two-bay design, with a window at the ground level of each bay, although the left window is blinded. There is a segmental-arched window in the gablehead of the attic.

The north elevation includes a single-storey half-piended addition at the center, with a timber-boarded lean-to addition at the northwest angle that projects north from the right side of this addition.

The south elevation features six-pane timber casement windows, along with a lattice window in the gablehead at the center. The east elevation has 16-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof, which was originally slate, is now covered with felt tiles and may have previously had jerkin-headed gables on the side elevations. There is also a boxed attic addition at the center of the rear, situated between two brick wallhead stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1996, but it is noted that panelled shutters were in place at that time.
