Description
No. 1 Blackadder Mount Farm Cottages is a single-storey range of cottages built in the later 19th century, with some alterations. Originally four cottages, it now has nine bays and is similar in style to the nearby Nos 4 and 5. The building is constructed from stugged sandstone ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and chamfered arrises.
The south elevation has a blank central bay, with windows in each of the three bays on either side. The middle bay on the right has a boarded door with a letterbox fanlight above it, while the left side's middle bay, which used to be a door opening, is now partially blinded. The outer bays are advanced and gabled, topped with ashlar finials, and each has a polished ashlar window with a cornice and parapet, along with pointed-arch arrow slit openings at the gableheads.
The north elevation has been altered, featuring projecting gabled outer bays with ashlar finials and small windows. Each outer bay has an addition projecting to the north, which is line-rendered on the east side.
Both the east and west elevations are similar, each having three bays with a door in the centre (a boarded door on the east and a modern door on the west) and a plate glass letterbox fanlight above. There are windows in each of the flanking bays, and projections to the north with windows on the south return elevation.
The windows are mostly 8-pane timber sash and case, except for the outer bays of the north elevation. The roof is covered with graded slate and features ashlar-based brick ridge stacks at the outer ends of each three-bay group. The skews are ashlar coped with bracketed skewputts.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
