Description
Blackadder Cottage is a mid-19th century single-storey cottage with a sunk basement at the rear and an attic. It has a rectangular plan and features a classical design. The exterior is constructed from stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, and includes a base course on the north elevation that forms a band course on the other sides. The cottage has a cornice and blocking course, along with raised long and short quoins.
On the northeast elevation, there is a panelled door on the left with an ornate cast-iron porch, and a blinded bipartite window to the right. Each end of this elevation has a panelled plinth above the blocking course, featuring stone couchant lions.
The south elevation, facing the river, has a modern partly-glazed door in the center at ground/basement level, with a plate glass letterbox fanlight above and flanking windows. At the first floor, there is a Venetian window with blinded flanking windows and a central keystone, set in a round-arched shallow niche that has a trefoil panel in the center. Above this, there is a pediment with an ovoid panel.
The east elevation features a Venetian window set in a shallow round-arch panel, similar to the south elevation, at the ground height of the north elevation.
The west elevation has a modern brick addition at ground level. It includes a blinded window in the center with a semicircular niche above, a blinded smaller window to the left, and a smaller window in a bay to the right.
The cottage has plate glass timber sash and case windows and a slate piended roof adorned with bands of ornamental fishscale slating. There are two flue octagonal coped wallhead stacks on the east side and a platform-roofed bipartite dormer in the center of the south elevation.
The interior was not seen in 1996. Additionally, to the west of the cottage, there is a sandstone round-arched entrance with sandstone rubble interior walls.
