Description
7 Alford Place is a mid-19th century cottage featuring a single storey, basement, and attic, with a three-bay design. The exterior is constructed of grey granite ashlar, with a rough-faced granite half-sunken basement, recessed aprons, an eaves course, and an eaves blocking course.
The south elevation is symmetrical, with five stone steps leading to a chamfered doorway set in a recessed panel at the center of the ground floor. This doorway has a modern door with a letterbox fanlight above it. There are windows in the flanking bays on both the ground floor and basement. A 12-light rectangular modern dormer is present on the attic floor.
The east elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, while the north elevation was not visible in 2000.
The west elevation is also symmetrical and consists of four bays. It features a recessed segmental-arched panel at the center of the ground floor, which has a keystone detail and contains two windows. Above this, there are two segmental-arched windows on the attic floor, along with a blind panel in the gablehead and a carved anthemion stone at the apex. The flanking bays on the ground floor have recessed windows, and the basement has regular fenestration. There is a single-storey granite rubble wing adjoining the outer left side, which has a bipartite window at the center and chip-carved consoles above.
The cottage predominantly features two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a lead ridge, with coped gablehead stacks topped with octagonal cans and coped stone skews. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.
The interior was not seen in 2000. The boundary walls consist of a low granite wall to the south and west, and a coped rubble wall to the north, which includes a boarded timber gate.
