Description

Archibald Simpson, begun circa 1836; modified Mackenzie and Matthews mid 19th century. 2-storey attic and basement, 25-bay terrace of 2-bay and 3-bay houses. Base course; 1st floor cill course; eaves cornice surmounted by eaves blocking course to Nos 2, 2A and 4; eaves blocking course to Nos 8-16. Stones steps with railings to pilastered doorways with letterbox fanlights, panelled timber doors, replacement to Nos 4, 10 and 12. Regular fenestration to basements.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; Nos 2 and 2A: 4-bay mirrored pair of 2-bay houses, doorways to central 2 bays at ground floor, flanked to left and right by single windows; regular fenestration to 1st floor; canted dormer flanked by skylight to No 2, rectangular dormer to No 2A. No 4: originally 6-bay mirrored pair of 3-bay houses, doorways to 2 central bays knocked into single broad doorway with 2-leaf timber door, enclosed by glazed panel, keystone detail above; regular fenestration to remaining bays at ground and 1st floor; canted dormers to attic floor. Nos 8-14: 3-bay houses; doorways to right of ground floor, flanked to left by 2 windows, regular fenestration to 1st floor; rectangular dormers to attic floor of Nos 8, 10 and 14, canted dormer flanked by skylight to No 12. No 16: symmetrical 3 bay house, doorway to centre of ground floor, flanked to left and right by windows; regular fenestration to 1st floor; canted windows to left and right of 1st floor.

E ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; 3-bay; gabled; narrow windows to centre of ground and 1st floors, blind window to attic; windows to flanking bays to left and right of ground and 1st floors. 2-storey, single bay block adjoining to outer right, window to each floor.

N ELEVATION: irregular doorways and fenestration; various additions; dormers to attic floor.

W ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; 3-bay; near-regular fenestration to ground and 1st floors; single window off-centre to left of gablehead.

Predominantly 4-pane and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof with lead ridge. Coped granite gablehead and ridge stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods, predominantly recessed in wall to principal elevation.

INTERIORS: not seen 2000.
