Description

4 Albyn Place, Aberdeen, is a 25-bay terrace of two- and three-bay houses that was begun around 1836 by Archibald Simpson and modified in the mid-19th century by Mackenzie and Matthews. The terrace includes a basement and attic level. The construction utilizes a base course, a first floor sill course, an eaves cornice surmounted by eaves blocking courses to numbers 2, 2A, and 4, with further eaves blocking courses to numbers 8-16. Stone steps with railings lead to pilastered doorways featuring letterbox fanlights and panelled timber doors, with replacements at numbers 4, 10, and 12. Regular basement windows are present throughout the terrace.

The principal south elevation is asymmetrical. Numbers 2 and 2A comprise a mirrored pair of two-bay houses with doorways in the central two bays at ground floor, flanked by single windows. The first floor has regular fenestration; number 2 has a canted dormer flanked by a skylight, while number 2A has a rectangular dormer. Number 4 originally presented a mirrored pair of three-bay houses; the doorways in the two central bays have been combined into a single, broad doorway with a two-leaf timber door enclosed by glazed panels, topped with a keystone. Regular fenestration is found in the remaining bays at ground and first floor, with canted dormers in the attic. Numbers 8-14 are three-bay houses with doorways on the right of the ground floor, flanked to the left by two windows, and regular first floor fenestration. Attics feature rectangular dormers on numbers 8, 10, and 14, while number 12 has a canted dormer flanked by a skylight. Number 16 is a symmetrical three-bay house with a central ground floor doorway flanked by windows, regular first floor fenestration, and canted windows to the left and right of the first floor.

The east elevation is near-symmetrical, three bays wide, and gabled. A narrow window is centrally positioned on the ground and first floors, with a blind window to the attic. Flanking bays have windows on both the ground and first floors. A two-storey, single-bay block adjoins the outer right side, with a window on each floor.

The north elevation is irregular, with varying doorways and fenestration, alongside various additions and dormers to the attic floor.

The west elevation is near-symmetrical, three bays wide, with near-regular fenestration to the ground and first floors, and a single window off-centre to the left of the gablehead.

Predominantly four-pane and twelve-pane timber sash and case windows are found throughout. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead ridges. The building incorporates coped granite gableheads and ridge stacks topped with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are mostly recessed within the wall on the principal elevation. Interiors were not inspected in 2000.
