Description
The Dovecot at Wester Pencaitland Farm is a 17th-century lectern dovecot with a rectangular plan measuring approximately 21 feet by 27 feet. It is constructed of rubble sandstone, which was previously harled, and features two rat courses, one located at the eaves level. The dovecot is positioned on rising ground. There is a doorway at the center of the south side, along with two semi-circular flight-holes and a blank panel beneath the eaves, which may have been inscribed or served as a former sundial. The rear wall is finished with ashlar coping, and the side elevations have raised crowstepped skews. The roof is made of purple slate and includes a row of flight-holes at the midpoint. Inside, there are square nesting boxes designed to accommodate 1,136 pigeons.
