Description
The Doocot at Ruchlaw House is probably from the 17th century and is designed as a lectern dovecot. It measures approximately 26 feet by 15 feet in plan and stands 30 feet high at the rear. The structure is built from red sandstone rubble and features natural harling with a grey slate roof. A rat course encircles the dovecot and extends to the north at the ridge. On the south side, there are two doorways, each with two square flight-holes above them, and two sets of ten flight-holes located at the midpoint of the south pitch. Inside, there are 1,394 nesting boxes. At the rear, there is a slightly later lean-to rubble addition that serves as a buttress to the north, featuring a pantile roof and slate eaves easing course.
