Description
The Village Hall in Smailholm is a single-storey building originally constructed in 1860, with later additions and alterations, and was converted for use as a village hall in 1973. It features a rectangular central block with three bays, flanked by two lower wings that each have two bays. There is a lean-to addition at the rear to the northwest and a flat-roofed addition at the rear to the northeast. The front is made of squared and snecked whinstone, while the sides and rear are constructed from harl-pointed whinstone rubble, with cream sandstone dressings throughout. Notable architectural details include a raised base course, narrow quoin strips on the central block, tooled quoins, tooled surrounds to the openings, plain margins, and projecting cills.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, the central block has large single windows in all three bays. The lower wing to the right is slightly recessed and features a boarded timber door on the left, with a single window to the right. The lower wing to the left is also slightly recessed and has single windows in both bays.
The southwest (side) elevation includes a projecting gable-end with a large single window offset to the left of center, and a single window in the lean-to addition on the outer left.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, the central block has large single windows in all three bays. The lower wing to the right has a lean-to addition projecting to the outer right, while the lower wing to the left features a flat-roofed projection at the front.
The northeast (side) elevation has a projecting gable-end with a large single window offset to the right of center, complete with a relieving arch, and a flat-roofed addition on the outer right.
The windows are timber sash and case with 4-, 12-, and 24-pane glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slate and feature sawtooth skews. The central block has squat remains of apex stacks, although the cans are missing. The interior was not seen in 1999.
