Barn And Granary, West Third Cottage, Smailholm

Group of late 18th century ranges, partially reconstructed mid 19th century, including granary to W; ?barn at SE. All 3 buildings currently harled unsympathetically with cement based harl (1992).

GRANARY: probably late 18th/early 19th century. 2 blocks divided by partition wall; rubble-built (harled), with droved quoins and margins (narrow neatly-droved margin, more random tooling at tails); slated roof, stone skews, brick end stacks (that to W lost) and central stack over partition wall.

S (ENTTRANCE) ELELAVTION: W BLOCK; 2-bays, wide vehicular entrance with boarded door and timber lintel to left, small square marginless window to right; pair square windows over at loft, probably enlarged slightly form original, with raised ashlar dressings and cills. Original glazing pattern, with 3-pane lower and 6-pane upper sashes with some alterations .

E Block: 3 symmetrical bays, entrance in ashlar shallow-pedimented doorcase to right, forestair to left hand, loft door off-centre left; single square windows falnking loft door over (modern glazing).

N ELEVATION (TO ROAD): blind at geound - except for small window near W end, pair windows close up at eaves at loft to E and W blocks, W block windows with ashlar dressings.

COTTAGE: probably late 18th century, single storey reconstructed with triangular-headed dormer windows breaking eaves mid 19th century.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: entrance to centre with ashlar doorpiece of mid 19th century date, 4 panel narrow door recessed, narrow 2-pane fanlight over. Small square original late 18th century windows with 2-pane sash and case glazing flanking at ground, corresponding 2-panel shutters internally, 8-pane sash and case glazing at 2 later dormer-headed windows over.

Interior: stone fireplace at ground on W gable wall with monolithic droved ashlar jambs and frieze of ?mid 19th century date.

?BARN: probaly late 18th century; abuts cottage to S; hayloft openings (door left, window with 4-pane sash and case glazing to right), approached by forestair at E gable; blind to left at N elevation, left hand section brought slightly forward, modern windows introduced at N to right in slightly set-back elevation at ground and loft. Single, small square original window to left at ground in W gable.

Interior: A-frame roof of adzed timbers.
