Description

The site contains a group of late 18th century farm buildings, partially reconstructed in the mid-19th century, comprising a granary, a cottage, and a barn. The buildings were re-harled in 1992 using an unsympathetic cement-based harl.

The granary, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, consists of two blocks separated by a partition wall. It is rubble-built with droved quoins and margins; the margins are neatly droved but have more random tooling at the tails. The roof is slated, with stone skews, brick end stacks (one to the west is missing), and a central stack over the partition wall. The south-facing elevation of the west block has two bays. A wide vehicular entrance with a boarded door and timber lintel is located on the left, with a small, marginless window to the right. Above are a pair of square windows, likely slightly enlarged from their original size, with raised ashlar dressings and cills. The windows retain their original glazing pattern of 3 panes at the bottom and 6 panes at the top, though some alterations have occurred. The east block has three symmetrical bays, featuring an entrance in a shallow-pedimented ashlar doorcase to the right and a forestair to the left. A loft door is offset to the left, with single square windows flanking it. Modern glazing is present in these windows. The north elevation is largely blind at ground level, except for a small window near the west end. A pair of windows are located near the eaves of both the west and east blocks, with the west block windows featuring ashlar dressings.

The cottage, probably dating to the late 18th century, was reconstructed in the mid-19th century with the addition of triangular-headed dormer windows that break the eaves. The south-facing elevation features a mid-19th century ashlar doorpiece with a four-panel door recessed within, and a narrow two-pane fanlight above. Small, original late 18th century square windows with two-pane sash and case glazing flank the entrance at ground level; matching two-panel shutters are internally. The dormer windows have eight-pane sash and case glazing.

The interior of the cottage has a stone fireplace on the west gable wall with monolithic droved ashlar jambs and a frieze, likely dating to the mid-19th century.

The barn, probably late 18th century, abuts the cottage to the south. It has hayloft openings – a door to the left and a window with four-pane sash and case glazing to the right – accessed by a forestair at the east gable. The north elevation is largely blind, with a section brought slightly forward and modern windows introduced at the right in a slightly set-back section at ground and loft levels. A single, small square original window is located to the left at ground level in the west gable. The barn’s interior features an A-frame roof constructed of adzed timbers.
