Description

The Alders is a 2-storey house with an attic and basement, built in 1856. It has a rectangular plan and features a single-storey wing at the rear. The exterior is made of squared sandstone rubble, with stugged ashlar quoins and quoin strips, and it has a deep base course. The window openings have raised margins and are shouldered.

The principal (west) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central doorpiece that is pilastered, corniced, and topped with a block pediment. This doorpiece includes a deep-set panelled timber door and a plate glass fanlight. There are windows in the flanking bays, with regular fenestration on the first floor and a canted dormer window above the outer bays.

The north and south elevations have gabled roofs with a window in the centre of each floor; the first-floor window on the north side is blinded. The east elevation, facing Hatton Road, includes a small piended bay with a single window and a door on the return to the right of centre at ground level, a large stair window in the centre above, and additional windows in the flanking bays on each floor.

The house features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, and cavetto-coped ashlar stacks with polygonal cans. Inside, there are some decorative plasterwork cornices and a staircase with decorative cast-iron railings, although these were not seen in 2002. The property is enclosed by semicircular-coped rubble boundary walls, which include a pedestrian gate to the west.
