Description

The Old Parish Churchyard in Blairgowrie dates from the late 17th century and later. It features a rubble-walled enclosure situated on a steeply sloping site at the edge of a ravine. Many headstones are placed flat into the ground.

To the south and west of the church, there are earlier gravestones, including some tablestones and simple moulded apex styles. Notable examples include a flat slab with large relief-carved upside-down letters reading 'HERE LYES THE BODYS OF JOHN BAXTER', who died in 1691; a 1706 slab featuring a skull flanked by crossed bones; a small plain incised headstone dated '1745' with the inscription 'HERE LYS THE BONES OF JEAN MALL?'; and a weathered incised stone with a winged angel.

The Macpherson family burial ground is located at the southwest boundary, featuring a cross-finialled crowstepped entrance to the west. This entrance includes a boarded timber door topped with a carved panel that bears the inscription 'MACPHERSON BLAIRGOWRIE 1789' along with the family coat of arms.

Later additions to the churchyard include a row of 19th-century terraced enclosures to the south, some of which retain decorative ironwork. The steeply sloping site to the east contains scattered stones, including a square-section corniced ashlar column with an inset marble panel that reads 'In Memory of David Martin shoemaker who died 10 Aug 1804'. This column is topped with stylised pediments featuring corner acroteria and a carved lamb on a shallow plinth dated 1845.
