Description

The churchyard of Kirkcaldy Old Parish Church features headstones dating back to the 17th century, with many notable memorials from the 18th and 19th centuries. The headstones are located to the north, south, and west of the church, with a concentration of obelisks in the southeast corner.

On the south wall, there are dwarf wall enclosures for mural monuments that include pilastered tablets and heraldic pediments commemorating Robert Whyt from 1796 and James Townsend Oswald of Dunnikier from 1816. Additionally, there is a stone with a shaped pediment dedicated to Robert Whytt of Pourane, who died in 1667, and his wife Janet Tennant, who died in 1670. There are also cast-iron plaques from 1823 that record the ownership of lairs.

To the east, a shaped stone features masons' symbols for Anne Alison, who died in 1819, and George Oliphant, who died in 1845. The reverse side displays a skull, bones, and an hourglass for Robert Oliphant, who died in 1771.

On the north wall, there is a polished ashlar monument topped with an urn finial and flanked by pinnacles, dedicated to Robert Philp from 1828. Another significant monument is for Patrick Swan, who died in 1889, featuring an elaborately carved sarcophagus beneath a pedimented keystoned arch, with a Greek key frieze and the seal of Kirkcaldy on the tympanum. There is also a pedimented monument for Alexander Malcolm, a shipowner, and an ogee monument with gothic details and floreate capitals for John Anderson, a linen manufacturer, who died in 1866.

The boundary walls are constructed of random rubble with saddleback and semicircular coping. The gatepiers to the northwest, facing Kirk Wynd, are made of stop-chamfered rusticated ashlar with chamfered plinths and cavetto cornices, leading to raised bases that may have once held finials, possibly cast-iron lamps, along with decorative cast-iron gates. The gatepiers to the east are made of ashlar with pyramidal coping. A flight of stone steps to the southwest features an ashlar arch dated '1732' and initialed 'MAA' on the left and 'MDM' on the right, providing access from Kirk Wynd to the churchyard.
