Description

The TSB Savings Bank, located at 6 Kirk Wynd in Kirkcaldy, is a late 19th-century building that was extended around 1905. It is a two-storey, seven-bay bank building with a modern four-bay wing to the north, situated on ground that slopes down to the south. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar and features a part base course, cill and string courses, and a mutulated eaves cornice. The doorways are round-headed with keystones, while the windows are lugged and architraved, with pediments on the ground floor and segmental-headed, keystoned, and corniced windows on the first floor.

On the principal (west) elevation, there are seven symmetrical bays to the south. The central doorcase is flanked by recessed granite columns on corniced piers, which border a channelled cavetto splay and scroll consoles above a moulded panel displaying a modern 'TSB' sign. This is topped with a cavetto corniced canopy supported by balustrades and flanking piers that hold obelisks. The entrance features a deep-set panelled timber door and a semi-circular plate glass fanlight. To the left of the entrance are three windows, with the outer bays topped by triangular pediments and the centre bay by a semi-circular pediment, all above moulded windowheads with a circular motif. A cash-dispensing machine is located between the second and third bays.

The right side mirrors the left, but the outer bay has a round-headed, keystoned window that has been converted from a door. The first floor has a blank bay in the centre and three corniced windows on each side. The modern wing to the north is slightly recessed.

The windows are primarily plate glass in timber sash and case style, with modern windows in the north wing. The roof is covered with grey slates and features a coped ashlar ridge stack.

Inside, there is a timber balustered dog-leg staircase with fielded timber newels, along with a winding stair that has decorative cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail, both illuminated by circular lanterns. The banking hall has been modernized.
