Description

218 High Street in Kirkcaldy is a classical tenement building dating from 1834, which has been altered at the ground level. It features five bays and rises four storeys high, with shops located on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar and includes long and short quoins. There is a cornice at the ground floor, cill courses at the first and second floors, and cornices at the third and fourth floors. The southern elevation has a segmental-headed arch with voussoirs and architraved surrounds, with the surrounds on the first floor being shouldered.

On the northern elevation facing High Street, the ground floor includes a wide cart entrance with flagstones at the center, flanked by fluted Ionic columns in antis beneath a corniced blocking course. There are lamps attached to the outer pilasters, with the right one featuring a bronze plaque commemorating Adam Smith. The modern shops in the flanking bays have deep fascias. Above, there are five windows on each floor, with the fourth floor slightly set back and featuring smaller windows.

The southern elevation displays a variety of architectural elements, including a cart arch at the center, a stair tower to the right, and a corniced porch to the left, each with a panelled door and a two-part fanlight. The building has a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and coped ashlar stacks with cans.
