Description

Buchanan House, located on Hatton Road in New Rattray, was built in 1915 as a tall single storey and attic, 7-bay, U-plan respite home designed in the Arts and Crafts style. The building features steeply-pitched swept roofs and is constructed with narrow bands of squared rubble that have stugged margins, along with some finely droved quoins. A later lower wing is harled with ashlar dressings, and the ground falls steeply to the west.

On the east elevation, there is an advanced gabled bay to the left of the center, which includes a moulded doorcase with stylised pilasters, a frieze dated '1915', a cornice, and a deep-set two-leaf panelled timber door. Above the door, there is a relief carved stone in the gablehead that reads, "This house of recovery was founded by Emily Octavia Buchanan in memory of her husband Thomas Ryburn Buchanan MP for East Perthshire 1903-1910." The elevation also features a three-part rooflight above, a single window on each return, and windows in the flanking bays. There is an additional window to the outer left and three irregular windows grouped to the outer right. The lower extended wing projects at the outer left and includes various elements such as a broad chimney breast to the right, a return to the right with an advanced piended bay that has a large full-height window on the left, a ramp leading up to a part-glazed door with a plate glass fanlight to the right, and another window to the outer right.

The north elevation has three grouped windows to the right and a modern rooflight on the stepped roof. The west elevation, which faces the garden, displays a variety of elements in a largely symmetrical arrangement, including a conservatory and a tripartite window in a steeply-pitched gable at the center, with a tall stack immediately to the right, flanking piended dormer windows, and outer pavilion-type bays.

The windows throughout the building feature 8- and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case style, with some multi-pane glazing possibly in casement windows at the rear. The roof is covered with small grey banded slates, and there are coped ashlar ridge stacks with tall clay cans. The eaves overhang, and the gables are adorned with bargeboarding. Decorative cast-iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers are also present.

The interior was not seen in 2002. The property is enclosed by coped rubble boundary walls and features a pyramidally-coped, square-section ashlar gatepier.
