Description

Middlewood Hall is a house built between 1808 and 1813, originally indicated by dates on now-removed lead rainwater heads. The main part of the house is constructed of finely tooled sandstone with a 20th-century cement tile roof, while a wing to the right rear is of coursed squared sandstone with a stone slate roof. The house has two storeys and a symmetrical facade arranged with five bays across the front and two bays, with a central, projecting, pedimented bay. A plinth leads to three stone steps up to the central part-glazed front door, set within an architrave with consoles and a modillioned cornice. This doorway is within a flat-roofed open porch supported on twin clustered gothic columns, with engaged columns to the rear, a frieze and a cornice. The flanking bays have windows with projecting sills, stop-chamfered reveals and lintels finished to resemble wallstone. A band runs along the first floor, with a sill band above. Five first-floor windows have square reveals. Plate-glass sash windows are found throughout. There is a cornice to the eaves and pediment, and a hipped roof with two corniced ashlar stacks. The rear elevation features a tall, round-headed stair window with glazing bars. The wing has windows with four-light, flat-faced stone surrounds, a single central mullion, and small-pane casements. It also features long moulded kneelers and cavetto-moulded gable copings, along with a transverse ridge stack mirroring the main stacks. Inside, the entrance hall has an ornate cornice, a cantilevered stair, and a pilaster surround to the stair window.
