Description
66 Towngate Road is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a later front wing. It is built of deeply coursed, squared gritstone and has stone slate roofs. The house has a two-room plan with a lower, gabled wing that projects from the front right. The building features large quoins.
The front of the projecting wing has a 20th-century part-glazed door with a square-headed lintel on the left side, and a 20th-century casement window to its right. The main range has double-chamfered surrounds to the wood casements, although the stone mullions have been removed. On the ground floor, there is a former three-light window to the left with six fixed panes and a four-light window to the right. On the first floor, there is a two-light window to the left and a three-light window to the right. The wing has moulded kneelers and gable copings.
There are renewed stone end stacks to the left of the main range and the wing, with a brick stack on the main ridge. At the rear, there is a three-light double-chamfered window on the ground floor with a 20th-century casement, and a similar single light window above. The left return of the building is partially rendered and has a blocked two-light window at the apex.
