Description

Study Quiet, originally North Lodge to Rickerby House, now part of Eden School, dates from circa 1835 and was commissioned for George Head. The building is constructed of calciferous sandstone ashlar, with a bitumen roof and an ashlar chimney stack. It is a single-story structure of two bays, notable for its Doric tetrastyle temple fronts to both the front and rear elevations. These porticos feature a complete entablature with triglyphs, metopes, and guttae. The pediment displays carved armorial bearings within the tympanum, bearing the motto “STUDY QUIET,” which was the motto of George H. Head. The entrance is marked by squared pilaster strips and a six-panel door. Windows have moulded surrounds and sash windows. A 20th-century kitchen extension has been added to the left side, constructed with cement-rendered walls.
