Description
Moraston House is a house built around 1815, with later extensions added in the late 19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick and sandstone, featuring rendered brick stacks and a hipped Welsh slate roof. The building has a U-shaped plan, with the main front facing southeast and late 19th-century wings extending northwards. The front elevation has two storeys, while the rear wings have three storeys.
The south elevation displays a 2:1:2 window arrangement, with glazing bar sashes on the upper storey and plate-glass sashes on the ground floor, all fitted with louvred two-leaved shutters. The central section is advanced and features a Doric porch supported by four columns, leading to a semi-circular headed doorway with a fanlight and glazed door.
Inside, there is a cantilevered staircase with one niche beneath and two above the curve, finished with a mahogany handrail. The tread ends are adorned with quadrant-curve carving, and there is an alternating system of plain and enriched balusters. The principal room to the west of the main range includes high two-leaved doors with fluted architraves and corner paterae around the door surrounds on the ground floor. Two ground floor fireplaces feature a central shell motif, and there are box shutters in the main ground floor rooms and between the inner and outer doors of the main south entrance. Notably, the columns of the porch are hollow and made of wood.
