Description
Newton House is a house built around 1830, constructed from sandstone ashlar with a string course and a moulded cornice. It features a hipped slate roof with a parapet and brick internal stacks. The house has a double-pile plan and is two storeys high, with a symmetrical front that consists of three bays across and three bays deep. The entrance includes an open-fronted porch supported by piers with moulded sunk panels, an entablature, and a moulded cornice. The front door is six-panelled and has a moulded wood surround with sunk-panelled pilaster strips and consoles, along with sidelights that have horizontal glazing bars. The windows are sash style.
To the left, there is a lower service wing that is set back and features an imitation ashlar blank wall. The right return side has a blind central bar and a lower one-storey range. Inside, the entrance hall is L-shaped and has a moulded arch with reeded pilasters leading to the staircase hall. The dog-leg staircase on the left has stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. On the first floor, there is a similar arch and a shallow glazed dome. Moulded modillion cornices are present throughout the house, along with six-panelled doors that have reeded or panelled architraves. The room to the left features staple marble fireplaces.
