Description
This milestone, located southwest of Drawdykes Castle, dates from around 1758 and was originally erected for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to present two faces in the direction of traffic. One face has a cast plate inscribed with "CARLISLE 2 MILES" in three lines, while the other face reads "TO NEWCASTLE 54 MILES" in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this route became the Carlisle-Tamon Turnpike. Each milestone is depicted on Hodgskinson and Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
