Description

Brunstock House is a house dating to between 1827 and 1833, designed by Rickman for George Saul. It is constructed of calciferous sandstone ashlar with graduated slate roofs, decorated wooden bargeboards to the gables, and ashlar chimney stacks. The house is two storeys with a three-bay main block and a single-storey wing of five bays. The entrance is emphasized by a portico of three pointed moulded arches supported by quatreform columns, buttressed and pinnacled at the angles, featuring two panels of chevron arms and a castellated parapet. Flanking the portico are two projecting canted castellated bays with mullioned and transomed windows of eight lights, incorporating cast-iron casements with glazing bars. A gabled dormer above the entrance features a triple window with Gothic tracery and a drip mould, flanked by two triple mullioned windows with cinquefoil leads and a continuous drip mould. A rose window is set in the apex of the gable. Broad pilaster strips define the angles, and a moulded string course runs around the building. The chimneys are distinctive: single, double, and triple hexagonal stacks rising from square bases with moulded caps. The wing is characterised by four large pointed arch cross-mullioned windows with Gothic tracery, a castellated parapet, and a lead hipped slate roof, culminating in an open Gothic screen arch with a recessed bay beyond. The interior retains moulded Gothic plaster ceilings and marble fireplaces; only the kitchen has been altered. A stable block, built of English garden wall bond brickwork with stone surrounds, casements with glazing bars, and plank doors, sits behind an English garden wall to the rear.
