Description

This milestone, likely dating from 1758, is located on the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road, east of New Mills Bridge in Brampton. Made of sandstone with cast-iron plates, it features chamfered stone to present two faces in the direction of traffic. One side displays the inscription "TO CARLISLE 11 MILES," while the other reads "TO NEWCASTLE 45 MILES," both arranged in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this road became the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. The milestone is also depicted on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
