Description
Four Gables is a house dated 1879, designed by Philip Webb for the Agent to the Earl of Carlisle. It is built of dressed red sandstone with ashlar quoins, modillions, and dressings, topped with a graduated green slate roof and sandstone chimney stacks. The house is 2½ storeys tall, featuring 2 bays along with a 1½ storey, 3 bay extension and a single storey stable block.
The entrance has a projecting gabled porch with a round-headed recess that contains a top-glazed, 8-panel square-headed door. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in chamfered surrounds with segmental pediments above the first floor. There are two double casements in the gable that feature a joining hood-mould, while other smaller windows are square leaded casements. The left wing includes 1-3-4 light mullioned windows with square leaded lights. A triple mullioned dormer window with a sloping roof is flanked by double mullioned windows with glazing bars, all of which are corbelled out. The coped gables have kneelers and are topped by a steeply pitched green slate roof. The outbuildings share similar roofs and have plank doors. An additional extension, which has been converted into a house, has undergone significant alterations and is not included in the listing.
Inside, the house features finely worked details throughout, including several individually designed stone fireplaces, with the one in the dining room having a panelled surround and cupboards. There are also two interesting staircases, one of which has large diagonal beams on stone corbels across the landing at the turn of the stairs.
