Description

The Howard Memorial Shelter dates to around 1930. It commemorates George James Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle (1843-1911), and his wife, Rosalind Frances (1845-1921). The shelter is located in the centre of Brampton Sands, near Brampton. Constructed of snecked calciferous sandstone ashlar with a stone-slate roof, it is an octagonal, single-story building with partially open sides. Squared columns are carried internally to support a vaulted roof with a central circular column. Oak lintels and an open timber roof are also present. The floor features a stepped flagged surround with herringbone brickwork. Stone seats are positioned around the central column and along the inside of the filled arches, with an inscription stone set within. The shelter’s group value is as a local memorial.
