Description
The monument on Brampton Mote is a tribute to the Earl of Carlisle, designed by J.H. Foley, RA, and dated 1870. It was cast by H Prince & Co, Founders, Southwark, and was erected through public subscription. The monument features a calciferous sandstone plinth with a stepped design and a squared shaft, topped by a full-size bronze statue of a figure dressed in the robes of a Knight of the Garter. The statue is inscribed to George William Frederick Howard, the 7th Earl of Carlisle, who was born on April 18, 1802, and died on December 5, 1864. The statue itself is dated 1869 and includes the sculptor's name and the founder's details, while the plinth is dated 1870.
