Description
This milestone, located east of The Sands in Brampton, dates from around 1758 and was erected for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to display two faces for traffic direction. One face has a cast plate indicating "TO CARLISLE 10 MILES," while the other states "TO NEWCASTLE 46 MILES," both presented in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this route became the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. The milestone is also depicted on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
