Description
This milestone, located north-east of Crosby House, was likely erected in 1758 for the Carlisle-Newcastle solitary Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to present two faces in the direction of traffic. One face has a cast plate indicating "TO CARLISLE 5 MILES," while the other states "TO NEWCASTLE 51 MILES," both displayed in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this route became the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. Each milestone is clearly marked on Hodgskinson and Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
