Description
The outbuildings north-west of Edmond Castle were originally stables, built between 1824 and 1827 for Thomas Henry Graham by Sir Robert Smirke. They feature extensions likely added in the late 1860s or early 1870s, along with 20th-century alterations for the Home Office and County Council. The garden front is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar, while the courtyard is made of mixed red and yellow sandstone. The buildings form a U-shape and are one to two storeys high, with a three-storey square tower closest to the main house. This tower has coursed rubble walls, reeded ashlar quoins and dressings, and lancet windows with chamfered surrounds. The east face of the tower features a wall clock, a square angle turret, and a battlemented parapet. The west carriage arch and tower are made of red sandstone and brick, with pigeon holes above a filled window and a hipped slate roof topped with an additional slate cupola. The inner walls of the courtyard have large mid-20th-century steel and wood casement windows. The outbuildings are listed partly for their group value with the adjoining house.
