Description

The bank barn, gin case, cart shed, pig hulls, and walls at Castle Hill are located to the northwest of the farmhouse and date from the early 19th century. The bank barn is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar lintels and jambs, topped with an asbestos sheet roof. It has an entrance from the field on the west elevation, accessed through a sandstone porch featuring a catslide roof. There are additional entrances on the ground floor from the yard to the east. The eastern elevation includes a stable door with a window and three byre doorways, each with two ventilation slits. Above one of the byre doors is a winnowing door, and to the right are two rows of ventilation slits.

The gin case is attached to the west side of the bank barn and connects to the left return of the cart shed. It is two storeys high, with a two-window range on the west face and north return, and one window on the south side. The ground floor features a variety of openings, several with original design sashes. The gin case is made of sandstone in squared rubble with ashlar corners and has a pyramidal slate roof. It is dated 1830 and bears the initials A and FB for Abraham Bird. Additionally, there is an inserted date stone from 1683 with the initials ID:ID, and a stone finial at the apex of the roof.

The single-storey cart shed, made of sandstone and covered with a slate roof, is attached to the north of the bank barn. The listing also includes the single-storey pig hulls and brew house located to the north of the bank barn, which form the northwest corner of the farmyard, as well as the sandstone walls that enclose a sheltered yard to the north.
