Description

Milestone dating from 1830, created for the Carlisle to Brampton Turnpike Trust. It is made of red sandstone and cast iron. The squared stone has a pyramidal top and is set at an angle to the road, providing two faces for traffic directions. Cast plates are set into each face, with the east face inscribed "TO CARLISLE 4 MILES" and the west face inscribed "TO BRAMPTON 5 MILES." There is a metal stud on top, which features a benchmark. The milestone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
