Description
The Queens Inn is an early 19th-century public house situated in Wetheral. It is constructed of sandstone walls with flush quoins, originally designed to be rendered but now whitewashed; the roof is slate-covered with brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within plain, squared surrounds. A plank front door has joint strips and is topped by a console bracketed cornice. Original shutter retaining catches and horse-tie rings remain in place. A 20th-century glazed porch links the main building to a two-storey extension of two bays, built at a similar date and with matching features, except for late 19th-century sash windows. The inn likely predates the 1830 Carlisle-Brampton Turnpike. It was managed by the Central Control Board from 1916, returning to private ownership in 1973.
