Description

This milestone dates from 1830 and was originally part of the Carlisle-Brampton Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features cast iron plates. The stone is squared with a chamfered top and is set at an angle to the road, allowing for two faces visible to traffic. The east-facing plate is inscribed "TO CARLISLE 5 MILES" and the west-facing plate reads "TO BRAMPTON 4 MILES." The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. It may have been relocated from its original position to accommodate road widening.
