Description
Curthwaite House and the adjoining stable/barn date from the late 18th century, with the stable/barn incorporating elements of a 17th-century house that underwent late 18th-century alterations. The house features incised stucco over sandstone rubble and has a graduated greenslate roof topped with a painted stone chimney stack. The stable/barn has whitewashed rubble walls and is covered by a corrugated asbestos roof.
The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a lower two-storey, single-bay extension on the right. The stable/barn is attached at the rear right, creating an overall L-shape. The main entrance features a top-glazed panelled door set in a panelled reveal with an eared architrave beneath a pediment. The house has sash windows with glazing bars, framed by painted stone architraves, and similar double sash windows are found in the extension.
The end wall on the right has plank doors and loft doors, with one loft door accessible via external stone steps. The stable/barn extends to the right under a common roof and includes plank doors, loft doors, and small openings with chamfered surrounds. While the adjoining outbuildings are not of particular interest, they contain a reused lintel inscribed with "1678 R.H. D.H.", likely from the original farmhouse.
