Description
Curtain House and the adjacent barn to the west are a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The barn is likely from the 19th century as well. The buildings are constructed from rubble, which is massive in parts, and feature heavy, roughly-shaped quoins along with later stone dressings. Both the house and barn have stone slate roofs, and there is a stone stack on the right gable of the house.
The house is two storeys high and has two bays. It features a boarded door surrounded by large blocks, with a shield-shaped block above that is likely a former datestone. To the right of the door is a late 19th-century sash window with alternating jambs, and a similar window above it has a chamfered sill that has been re-used from an earlier opening. There is also a small window to the left. The barn to the left has a cart entrance with alternating jambs and a timber lintel, as well as slit vents. At the rear, there is an outshut that dates from the 18th or early 19th century.
Inside, the house mainly displays 19th-century features, including a small barred window that now opens into the outshut. There are also two principal-rafter roof trusses with collars that may date from the late 17th century or 18th century. A later cottage to the right is not of special interest.
