Description

This range of farm buildings, located north-east of the bungalow at the southern farm in Old Town, consists of a bastle house from the late 16th century or early 17th century, which was remodeled around 1700 and partly rebuilt in 1984. It also includes a barn dated 1821, featuring the initials I.P. on its lintel. The buildings are constructed of rubble with stone dressings. The barn has a stone slate roof, while the bastle has a 20th-century metal roof.

The elevation facing the farmyard is two storeys high. The barn includes boarded doors with alternating jambs, one of which is located on the first floor above an external stone stair, along with slit vents. The bastle to the right has upper and lower doorways with chamfered surrounds that have been re-set in the rebuilt wall. The left return features a round-headed opening, likely re-used, in the gable. The rear elevation displays various openings, including a door with a dated lintel.

Inside, the end wall of the bastle retains its original byre doorway with a chamfered surround and a drawbar tunnel, along with old first-floor beams. The first floor also contains an 18th-century fireplace. The buildings are referenced in "Shielings and Bastles" by Mercer, McDowall, and Ramm, published by HMSO in 1970, where it is identified as Wester Old Town.
