Description

This is a planned group of early 19th-century farm buildings located to the northwest of High Frosthall Farmhouse. The buildings are constructed of squared stone with tooled and margined dressings, and have slate roofs. The layout includes a double foldyard, with a two-storey range at the rear, featuring a taller gabled threshing barn in the centre. To the right of the foldyard is a single-storey range, and to the left, a two-storey range that incorporates a cottage. A dividing wall within the foldyard leads to a central loosebox with a segmental-arched gable entrance. A low, flag-roofed structure attached to the right return of the threshing barn contains a boarded door, providing access to a large waterwheel situated in a pit beneath the barn floor. The waterwheel retains its drive shafts and gearing. To the rear of the main range is a smithy with an ashlar chimney stack. Cart entrances are segmental-arched, and windows are partly glazed and partly slatted. The gables of the threshing barn have round windows and block finials. The group of buildings is well-preserved, with the waterwheel and smithy being particularly noteworthy; the smithy retains most of its original fittings.
