Description
Burnlaw Farmhouse is a house that dates from the 16th century or early 17th century and was originally a bastle. It was remodeled and extended in the late 17th century, further extended in the 18th century, and altered in the 19th century. The main block is constructed of rubble with large quoins, while the extensions are also rubble with stone dressings and some parts rendered. The roofs are slate, with fish-scale detailing on the main block.
The front elevation features a two-storey main block with attics and three windows. There is a central door that has a dressed stone surround, and the windows are 16-pane sash types with slightly projecting sills, except for the window above the door, which is an altered two-light mullioned window. A small attic window beneath the eaves has a chamfered stone surround, and there are remains of several blocked mullioned windows.
To the left, there is a one-bay extension with two-light windows that have square-section mullions, along with a doorway that features wave-moulded jambs and head. A second extension to the left has a door with alternating jambs and altered windows, some of which retain remains of chamfered surrounds. The end chimneys are made of ashlar, with the outer ones having cornices and the one at the junction being stepped.
The rendered right return includes a central blocked round-headed door from the original bastle house, along with various 20th-century windows. The rear wing is three storeys high with an attic. The ground floor doorway has a flattened Tudor arch set in a square frame, with a lintel inscribed 'T.S. 1662', and there is an altered two-light mullioned window. On the first floor, there are two two-light mullioned windows with 19th-century leaded lights and colored glass margins, along with two small windows above that have chamfered surrounds.
