Description
Hindley Wrae Farmhouse is a house dated 1662 on the lintel, which was remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with quoins and is partly rendered, topped with a slate roof featuring ashlar stacks. The building has a square plan with four rooms, all served by a large central stack. This stack was modified in the 19th century by adding a smoke duct at the first-floor level that feeds into a new flue in the south wall.
The gabled south front is two storeys high and features two windows. There is a central six-panelled door with an overlight, flanked by 12-pane sash windows. The door surround, lintels, and sills are tooled and margined, and there is a stepped stack with a dripstone on the gable. The right side of the building has two-light mullioned windows, one of which has been altered, and a single-light window. The left side features two single-light windows and a three-light mullioned window above.
On the rear elevation, there is an off-centre doorway with a Tudor arch set in a square frame, which has the date and initials 'E.S.' on the lintel. Above this doorway is a centrally-placed single-light window. Inside, there is one 17th-century fireplace with a chamfered cambered lintel, along with two late 18th-century fireplaces. The roof features unusual 19th-century trusses with scissor bracing.
