Description
The farmhouse and adjacent outbuildings at the Northern Farm in Old Town date from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with the central section of the house rebuilt in the early 19th century. The house is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, while the east bastle is made of large rubble and the west bastle features cyclopean rubble, all topped with slate roofs. The house is two storeys high and has two wide bays.
The central projecting porch includes a door with five round-headed panels and an overlight, topped by an open pedimented gable with heavy moulded kneelers. The left bay features 16-pane sash windows in moulded boxes, while the right bay has a ground floor paired casement window set in a lugged raised stone surround with stop chamfers, and a 16-pane sash window in a raised stone surround above. The left end stack is made of ashlar, and the right end stack is rendered.
The left bastle is two storeys with two irregular bays, and its wall has been largely rebuilt with various openings, including a 9-pane fixed window. The right bastle is also two storeys with two irregular bays, featuring a much-patched wall and small windows. The right return, within a later outbuilding, shows a central byre entrance of the bastle with a monolithic triangular head. The left return has a central byre entrance with chamfered jambs and lintel. The rear elevation of the house is rendered, and the long rear wing is not of interest. The left bastle has a boarded door and a 9-pane fixed window above, along with a heavy stone spout at mid-height. The right bastle has an inserted cart entrance, and its wall has been rebuilt above the first floor level.
