Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a parish church located on a medieval site in Allendale Town. It was built in 1874 by the architects Austin & Johnson, with the lower part of the tower dating back to 1807. The church is constructed of squared stone with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs. It features an aisled nave and chancel, along with a west tower designed in a free 14th-century style.
The west tower consists of four stepped stages and has a pointed south doorway with a hoodmould. Above the doorway, there is stonework indicating the dates of rebuilding and restoration. The belfry has paired pointed openings, and the tower is topped with an embattled parapet, pinnacles, and a pyramid roof with a vane. The aisle walls are punctuated with windows, mostly of two lights, and supported by stepped buttresses. A sundial at the west end of the south wall is inscribed with "HORA FUGIT 1842 LAT 54 50," referencing Allendale Town's geographical position as the center of Britain. The chancel features similar fenestration, including a three-light east window and 20th-century roof lights.
Inside, the church has four-bay nave arcades, a chancel arch, and two-bay chancel arcades, all in the 14th-century style with hollow-chamfered arches and moulded capitals. The tower arch from 1807 is simply pointed. Most of the fittings are from the later 19th century, including an elaborate reredos made of yellow Italian marble and mosaic work dated 1887. The stained glass in the north aisle was created by the Atkinson brothers of Newcastle in 1906.
