Description

The Trustee Savings Bank, built in 1873, is located on the east side of Allendale Market Place. This bank features squared stone with tooled and margined quoins, while the rear elevation is constructed of rubble. It has a slate roof with coped gables and corniced stacks. The architectural style is reminiscent of the 17th century, with a Baroque doorcase.

The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with ground floor sill and first floor string courses. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door set beneath a keyed round-headed moulded arch, adorned with roses in the spandrels. This door is flanked by Ionic pilasters that support an entablature inscribed with "SAVINGS BANK ESTABLISHED 1838 THIS BUILDING ERECTED 1873," topped with a pediment featuring urns and a central rose finial. Above the porch, there are paired casements.

The projecting gabled right bay includes a ground floor six-light window with a king mullion and transom, a first floor four-light mullioned window with a dripmould, and a two-light opening above. The left bay has a ground floor four-light window with a king mullion and hoodmould, a first floor three-light mullioned window, and a two-light opening in the gablet above.
